Nourishing your body before, during, and after birth

Writer's picture: Tayler ClemmTayler Clemm

This week I was able to do my first prenatal nutrition consultation with a Mama who is 6 months pregnant! It was so rewarding to hear this first time mom concerned if she was doing the right things to nourish herself and her growing baby. It was rewarding because she cared! She cared about what she consumed because she knew that it directly affects her body and another human's body! And yes she was doing a wonderful job.

With that, I thought it would be valuable if I shared some of my top tips to make sure you are getting proper nourishment before, during, and after birth.

Nutrition is essential in living a life full of joy. And you deserve joy, right? May these tips be helpful for you and the entire family.

6 Tips to nourish the growing baby, the mother, and the entire family

  1. Drink room temperature water upon waking up. Add lemon, lime, or even mint leaves to help add a “cleansing” power to the water. I like to have a cup at my bedside before I go to sleep so that I already have it ready for me upon waking up. I want to also emphasize a glass cup as plastic single use water bottles are harmful to you and the environment.

  2. Eat Fresh Fruit, all the time. Eating fruit is essential for good health. We should be getting many servings of fruit throughout the day. Try eating at least 3 pieces of fruit each day. Starting your day with fruit is a great option for your break-fast. It allows your digestion system to be awakened with joy, and not bogged down with bread, meats, and excessive amounts of sugar (processed cereals, coffee drinks, etc.) that we typically see in your average American break-fast. Keep in mind that processed fruit has little nutrients (including canned fruit, fruit pouches, packaged applesauce, etc. )

  3. Wherever you go, take your own food/snacks- This one has been essential for me to stay consistent, save money, and eat healthy. I have thermos cups that I could keep oatmeal, pasta, soup, beans/rice/ greens, and so much more nice and hot. I travel with hot food, sandwiches, fruit, and even my large glass half gallon of water or herbal tea. It is the reason why I'm almost always late when taking my children somewhere lol, however it is so rewarding when we get there and have everything we need, including our own silverware. Get your cooler bag, proper food containers and be set for wherever you go! If you are in a rush, grab whatever you can pack to possibly add to something that you may have to grab while out.

  4. Eat greens with most of your meals. Adding greens to your meals is easier than you think. Dark green veggies are high in calcium, even more than milk or calcium fortified orange juice. Vegetables such as kale, collard greens, watercress, mustard, swiss chard etc. are especially important for pregnant or lactating women. They supply a wide variety of vitamins and minerals including vitamin A and C, calcium and iron. Dark leafy greens also are rich in phytochemicals like beta carotene which protects against many forms of cancer. Buy fresh, organic vegetables whenever possible and eat at least one serving every day. Okra, green beans, and beets are other vegetables that are excellent to consume. Add green veggies to your sandwich, as a side dish to your meal, in pasta sauce (blend it all up and you won’t even know), or even in a smoothie. I like to massage greens, steam them, cook them like grandma (without the turkey leg), and add them to soups/stews, and beans.

  5. *Drink your tea/ medicine- Herbal tea is an excellent way to drink your medicine. My personal favorite is stinging nettle leaf tea. I’ve built a beautiful relationship with stinging nettle leaves over the years. As I nourish it in my garden, it nourishes me internally. I compare it to a daily multivitamin because of the rich minerals that it carries, including its high iron content. Nettle and many other herbs are excellent additions that could be added to your life. Try implementing a cup of tea a day. Chose herbs that you need in your life and stick to one at a time. If you’d like to learn more about tea and different herbs, send me a message and I’ll be sure to include more plant magic content!

  6. Read the ingredients and be an informed customer. Did you become informed and read the reviews on that new car, or before you bought those new shoes.? We should be treating our temples like they are golden and worth a billion bucks. Trust your source and know exactly what you are putting in your body, where it came from, how it was raised, what chemicals and preservatives were used, etc. And if you don’t know, do your research. We must take responsibility for our own health. No longer will we buy the foods that are making us sick. And please teach your children to become advocates for their health as well. They should know the ingredients in those Takis and how harmful they are to the mind, and body.

Eating clean and balanced is not confusing. In today's world there are many conflicting views, however Food is ALWAYS supposed to nourish us. In this journey, what you eat, what you drink, and how physically active you are all have the potential to affect how your body works, how you heal and grow, and how we maintain energy and strength for generations to come. In fact, a lot of typical pregnancy complications could be alleviated with proper nutrition (heartburn, back ache, low iron, etc).

Your decision to incorporate delicious vegetables, whole grains and legumes, lean and clean meat, and otherwise healthy food choices into your eating plan, even before entering pregnancy, will give your baby a strong start in life.

Congratulations mama, you are doing a wonderful job!
