As the seasons change and Spring breathes new life into the world around us, it's the perfect time to embark on a journey of internal cleansing and rejuvenation. One plant that holds tremendous ancestral wisdom and wellness benefits for this purpose is Cleavers (Galium aparine), also known as "stickyweed" or "goosegrass."

Finding and Safely Harvesting Cleavers:

Cleavers can be found growing abundantly in hedgerows, woodlands, and damp areas across many regions. When harvesting, look for young, vibrant plants with tender leaves and stems. Be sure to choose areas that haven't been treated with pesticides or herbicides. Always leave a portion of the plant behind to allow for regrowth and sustainability.

To safely harvest cleavers, use clean, sharp scissors or garden shears to snip the upper portion of the plant, including the leaves and stems. Avoid harvesting from polluted areas or places frequented by animals.

Multiple Ways to Use Cleavers:

1. Fresh Cleavers Tea: Simply infuse fresh cleavers leaves and stems in hot water for a refreshing and cleansing herbal tea. Steep for 5-10 minutes, then strain and enjoy.

2. Cleavers Tincture: Create a cleavers tincture by steeping chopped cleavers in alcohol or vinegar for several weeks. Strain the liquid and store it in a dark glass bottle for future use. Add a few drops to water or juice for an internal cleanse.

3. Cleavers Poultice: Crush fresh cleavers leaves and stems into a paste and apply directly to skin irritations, minor cuts, or insect bites for soothing relief and to promote healing.

4. Cleavers Salad: Incorporate young cleavers leaves into salads or smoothies for a nutritious boost. Their mild flavor adds a refreshing touch to Spring dishes.

Benefits for the Body:

Cleavers have been revered for centuries for its powerful medicinal properties and benefits for the body. Some of its key benefits include:

  • Lymphatic Support: Cleavers is renowned for its ability to support lymphatic health, aiding in the removal of toxins and waste from the body.

  • Kidney Health: This herb is also known for its diuretic properties, promoting healthy kidney function and assisting in the elimination of excess fluids and waste.

  • Skin Health: Cleavers can help clear up skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis, thanks to its detoxifying and purifying effects.

  • Digestive Aid: Drinking cleavers tea or incorporating it into your diet can support healthy digestion and alleviate bloating and discomfort.

As you embark on your Spring cleansing journey, consider incorporating the ancestral wisdom of cleavers into your routine. This plant offers a wealth of benefits for internal cleansing and rejuvenation, connecting us to the natural rhythms of the seasons and the healing power of Nature.
